Whats behind Sudoku and why is it as famous as it is?

Basically the term is japanese and translates baiscally as "each number is unique". This relates to the fact that each row, column and block needs to be unique in terms of its numbers.

Played on a square of variable size Sudoku you will find the standard sudoku as a 9x9 square with 9 3x3 blocks. One fact for its publicity is there are different variants. So there are smaller Sudoku for kids as 4x4 or 6x6 grids.
